Most websites are built for one. Here’s what it takes to succeed at both.


You’ve launched a new website. You’ve spent time crafting content, the design is clean, and the pages load quickly. By most measures, you’ve done everything right, yet the traffic data tells a different story.

So what’s going wrong?

The rules changed. Getting a website noticed in 2026 requires more than it did even a year ago. Search has fragmented, AI is answering a growing proportion of queries before users click anything, and-

the gap between a technically adequate website and one that actually gets found has widened considerably.

Here are the most common reasons websites fail to attract visitors, and what to do about each one.


Your SEO Foundations Are Weak

Organic search remains one of the most reliable sources of website traffic, but Google’s ranking criteria have become more demanding. A technically sound website with well-structured pages, a clear sitemap, and properly configured meta data is no longer a differentiator, it’s the baseline.

If you haven’t addressed the fundamentals, crawlability, canonical URLs, mobile performance, and correctly configured meta titles and descriptions, start there. Google Search Console is free and will surface the most pressing issues quickly.

Beyond the basics, Google’s January 2026 core update reinforced what has been a consistent direction throughout 2025: topical authority matters more than individual pages. Google evaluates how well an entire website covers a subject area, not just whether a single page targets a keyword. Strong internal linking, content clusters, and consistent publishing within a defined niche all contribute to this.


There Are Now Two Ways to Be Found, and Most Websites Only Address One

Getting found online in 2026 happens through two distinct channels. Understanding the difference between them, and what drives organic visibility in each, is now fundamental to any website strategy.

Search

Search is query-driven. Someone types a question or phrase, Google ranks pages against that intent, and your position in the results depends on how well your content satisfies that query relative to competing pages. This channel is well understood and has clear organic levers:

  • Content quality and topical authority: covering your subject area with depth and genuine expertise
  • Backlinks: earning references from credible, relevant external sources
  • Technical fundamentals: crawlability, clean site architecture, and correct meta data
  • Core Web Vitals: page experience as a tie-breaker when content quality is comparable
  • Structured data: Schema.org markup that generates rich results and improves how your pages are displayed in search listings, improving click-through rates independently of ranking position

Google AI Overviews, which appeared in around 16% of all searches by the end of 2025 according to Semrush, sit within this channel, they are generated from Google’s existing search index and are influenced by the same organic signals. A Pew Research Center study from July 2025 confirmed that users are less likely to click through when an AI summary appears, which makes strong rich result signals, including structured data, more important for capturing the clicks that do happen.

Discovery

Discovery is different in nature. AI systems, Google AI Overviews in deeper query modes, ChatGPT with search, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot are not waiting for a user to search. They are assembling answers from sources they have already assessed as trustworthy enough to cite. The question being asked of your website is no longer just “does this rank for this keyword?” but “is this source credible and clear enough to include in a generated answer?”

Discovery operates in two stages, each with its own organic requirements.

Stage one: data harvest. AI systems draw from two sources simultaneously, a large collection of training content (corpus) with a fixed cutoff date, and live web content retrieved in real time at the point a query is answered. This live retrieval mechanism (known as Retrieval-Augmented Generation, or RAG) is how every major AI engine prevents its responses from ageing. Without it, answers would reflect only what was known months ago. The organic implication is direct: your content needs to be fresh, crawlable, and accessible, not just historically, but at the moment a user asks a question. A site that is difficult to crawl, slow to load, or infrequently updated is less likely to be retrieved in the live harvest, regardless of its historical authority.

Stage two: confidence filtering. Once candidate sources have been gathered, the AI applies a confidence assessment, essentially determining whether each source is defined clearly enough and authoritatively enough to stake a generated answer on. This is where the second set of organic levers applies. A site that explicitly declares its identity, subject matter, services, location, and relationships in machine-readable Schema.org structured data gives the AI system less to infer and more to verify. A site that communicates all of this through unstructured prose alone requires the AI to make assumptions. When multiple credible sources are available and the AI must choose between them, it will default to whichever it can verify with the greatest confidence.

This is why Google’s statement that schema is “not required” to appear in AI Overviews is accurate but incomplete. Schema does not affect whether you are crawled. Schema directly influences whether you pass the confidence threshold in stage two, and in competitive topics, that distinction determines whether you are cited or overlooked.

The practical difference between Search and Discovery is this: Search rewards you for being the best answer to a specific query. Discovery rewards you for being a clearly defined, authoritative, and consistently accessible source on a topic, whether or not anyone is searching for you at that moment.


Your Keyword Strategy Is Misaligned

Targeting high-volume keywords dominated by established competitors is a slow road for a new or small website. The more competitive a search term, the harder it is to displace the sites already occupying the top positions.

A more practical approach is to focus on specific, intent-driven queries, the kind of searches made by people who are closer to making a decision. These terms typically have lower search volumes but higher conversion rates, and they’re more achievable for a site without an established authority profile.

Keyword research tools will help identify where realistic opportunities exist. Look at the gap between what you rank for and what your actual customers search for, it is often larger than expected.


Your Content Isn’t Earning Attention

Content is still central to how websites get found, but the bar for what constitutes useful content has risen substantially. Thin pages, generic summaries, and posts written primarily to target a keyword rather than answer a genuine question perform poorly, with both readers and search algorithms.

Google’s Helpful Content system, absorbed into its core ranking algorithm in March 2024, has been reinforced by three core updates in 2025 and further by the January 2026 core update, which the SEO community has widely characterised as placing greater emphasis on demonstrable first-hand experience. The consistent message from Google is that content must show genuine expertise or direct involvement with a topic; not just accurate information that could have been assembled from other sources.

AI-generated content published at volume without editorial judgement, original research, or authentic perspective is precisely what these updates are targeting. Google has not penalised AI-assisted content outright, but content lacking originality, real insight, or evidence of expertise continues to lose visibility.

Useful content in 2026 tends to be: specific, accurate, written with evident experience, and structured to directly address what the reader needs. Google’s own guidance remains consistent: write for people, not for search engines.


You Have Few or No Backlinks

The logic of backlinks hasn’t changed: links from credible, relevant external websites signal to search engines that your content is worth referencing. Sites with strong, relevant link profiles consistently outrank those without them.

What has changed is the quality threshold. A large number of low-quality or irrelevant links carries little value and can actively harm a site’s standing. Earning links from genuinely authoritative sources, industry publications, trade bodies, local directories, partners; takes more effort but delivers lasting benefit.

If you’re starting from zero, focus first on creating content or resources that others in your sector would naturally want to reference.


Your Page Experience Is Holding You Back

Google confirmed Core Web Vitals as a ranking signal as part of the Page Experience update in 2021, and they remain a confirmed factor today. The three metrics are Largest Contentful Paint (LCP, measuring loading performance), Interaction to Next Paint (INP, measuring responsiveness; which replaced the older First Input Delay metric in March 2024), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS, measuring visual stability).

Core Web Vitals function as a tie-breaker rather than a primary ranking signal, they are most influential when competing pages have comparable content quality and authority. Google’s systems use real-user field data collected via Chrome, not laboratory scores from tools such as PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse. Passing all three metrics at the “Good” threshold is the practical target; once reached, further optimisation is unlikely to yield additional ranking benefit.

The February 2026 Discover core update also formally added page experience, including avoiding intrusive ads, auto-playing media, and disruptive pop-ups; to Discover’s ranking criteria specifically. While this update targets the Discover feed rather than traditional search, it reflects Google’s broader and consistent direction: pages that create friction for users are deprioritised.


You’re Not Promoting What You Publish

Publishing content without actively distributing it is a slow strategy. Organic search takes time to build, and a new page will typically take weeks or months to gain meaningful visibility, if it ever does.

Active promotion closes that gap. Sharing new content through your owned channels, email, social media, direct outreach, generates early traffic and signals to search engines that content is being engaged with. It also creates the conditions for earning the backlinks discussed above.

Social media remains a relevant distribution channel, though organic reach on most platforms has declined substantially. The most useful platform will depend on where your actual audience spends time.


Your Titles Aren’t Working

Your page title and meta description are often the only elements a potential visitor sees before deciding whether to click. They also influence how your content is labelled when cited in AI-generated search summaries.

Titles should be specific and descriptive. Vague or generic headings underperform. If a page title could apply to any website in your sector, it is not working hard enough.


You’re Missing Structured Data

Schema.org structured data, implemented as JSON-LD, allows you to describe your organisation, services, location, reviews, and content in a machine-readable format. Google uses it to generate rich results in search, including enhanced listings that display additional information such as star ratings, FAQ answers, and breadcrumb trails. These can improve click-through rates even when rankings remain unchanged.

Google has stated that structured data is not a prerequisite for appearing in AI Overviews specifically. Its broader value to search visibility, through rich results, clearer entity understanding, and more accurate representation of your business, is well-established.

For local businesses, the minimum viable implementation includes LocalBusiness (or a more specific subtype), WebSite, and WebPage schema. For content-heavy sites, Article, FAQPage, and BreadcrumbList are also worth implementing. Structured data reduces reliance on inference from unstructured text and helps ensure that what search engines say about you is accurate.


Top Ranking Tips for Google Search 2026

If you’re working through this list and feeling overwhelmed, a practical order of priority is:

  1. Fix any technical SEO issues flagged in Google Search Console
  2. Ensure your Core Web Vitals field data reaches the “Good” threshold, prioritising mobile
  3. Implement foundational Schema.org structured data, must have for Rich Results
  4. Develop a realistic content strategy focused on specific topics, written from genuine experience or expertise
  5. Build a promotion plan; don’t publish and hope
  6. Work steadily on earning quality backlinks over time.
